Motherhood as a Metaphor for Creation
Creation of life is often described in terms of birth in most cultures and spiritual traditions —something that grows, nurtures, and develops in a womb, a sacred space of protection and possibility. By framing the creator as Soul Mother, the idea of life-giving energy combines creation with the sustenance and nurturing of life. In this sense, God as Soul Mother aligns with the fundamental role that mothers play: they are the beings who give life and sustain life. This also taps into an innate, primal understanding that the formation of life, the giving of birth, and sustaining of life is a maternal process.
From a philosophical standpoint, creation can be seen as an ongoing, sustaining act—something that happens over time, requiring patience, care, and constant attention. This is often attributed more to feminine energies. If we view the universe as a process that requires love, protection, and consistent support for growth, the nurturing concept of the Soul Mother fits naturally. This challenges the traditional concept of “creator” who is viewed as a paternal figure of love often aloof, distant, or judgmental. We bring the idea of a feminine creator who is intimately involved with the creating life force and sustaining the wellbeing of the created world.
